Hobart City Council’s South Hobart waste centre was awarded a contract worth A$8.25 million on 29 October to accept close to 50,000 tonnes of soil excavated at the Macquarie Point stadium precinct, Pulse Tasmania reported on 7 November. Pulse cites Tasmanian government tender records showing the Macquarie Point Development Corporation (MPDC) made the award to the McRobies Gully Waste Management Centre.
Why it matters
The material includes clean fill and Class 2 contaminated soil, which the council told Pulse is low-level contaminated soil that licensed facilities may take under strict Environment Protection Authority (EPA) rules. The council expects roughly A$5 million in revenue, Pulse reports, but says the figure hinges on the volume actually delivered.

New lord mayor Charles Wooley told Pulse the arrangement would provide “critical funding for the ongoing operation, maintenance and future redevelopment of the waste management centre”. The council plans to spend it on waste management upgrades, including its transfer facilities, Pulse says.
Pulse notes that in April 2025 the former council formally voted against the stadium. Wooley said running the centre is an operational matter distinct from the council’s planning position.
The numbers
Pulse reports the contract is worth A$7.5 million plus GST, runs for two years and drew three bids. The council says it lodged its bid in January, before the October elections, with officer approval, at a negotiated rate it calls normal for large volumes.
Trucks are due to start just before Christmas and keep going for eight to nine months, carrying about 1,325 tonnes weekly in roughly 20 movements a day on weekdays. McRobies Gully is capped at 85,000 tonnes a year, Pulse notes, and the council calls the job business as usual with no major effect on landfill life.
What’s next
Pulse reports the council has already pledged to shut the McRobies Gully landfill by 2030 as part of its zero waste to landfill goal, while the stadium contract itself runs until October 2028, according to the report. Specialist contractors will monitor contamination for MPDC under EPA oversight, and trucks will be washed before they leave the stadium site, according to Pulse. Our report on Veolia’s payment covers another precinct cost.
