Our standards
How we report, how we stay independent, and how we fix mistakes in the open.
How we report
The Australian Developer covers Australian property development: the projects, the capital behind them, the policy that shapes them, and the data that explains them. We select stories on what a developer, investor, or lender can act on: the size of the deal, whether it sets a precedent, whether it moves a market, and whether we can verify it. If a day is thin, the edition is short.
Sourcing
Our original reporting is the public record we read ourselves: council development applications and decisions, state planning approvals, ASIC insolvency notices, ASX announcements and official statistics, each linked so you can check it.
Our analysis of other outlets' reporting is much of our daily news file. When another outlet breaks a story, we credit it by name and link the original in the sources box at the end of the article; our contribution is the interpretation: what the deal implies, how the numbers compare, what to watch next.
Writing
Every article is written from scratch in our own voice. We never copy, lightly paraphrase, or mirror the structure of a source article. Facts and figures may be reported; another outlet's expression may not be reused.
Facts, figures and quotes
We do not fabricate. If a number cannot be verified in a source, it does not appear. We use at most one short direct quote per article, attributed to the person who said it. There are no invented quotes, ever. Market figures come from official series, each with its source and as-of date; where we compute something ourselves, we say what we did.
Images
We never scrape or hotlink images from other publications. Article and social graphics are generated from the headline, category, and market, except media explicitly distributed for press use.
Automation and human oversight
Our newsroom is heavily automated: software scans sources, drafts stories, and assembles each edition, under standards set and supervised by the editorial desk, which is accountable for everything published here. Automation sets our cadence. It does not lower the standard: every rule on this page applies to every story.
Independence
Coverage is not for sale. No one can pay to appear in these pages, to change how they appear, or to be left out. We do not accept payment, gifts, travel, or hospitality in exchange for coverage.
No advance approval. The subjects of our stories do not see them before publication. We will check a specific fact with a source when accuracy calls for it; that is not the same as showing them the story.
Anything paid gets labelled. If we ever run advertising, sponsorship, or partner content, it will be clearly marked and not written by the people who write the news.
Conflicts of interest. Where we have a financial or business relationship with a company we are writing about, we disclose it in the story itself.
Corrections
When we learn that a published article contains an error of fact, we fix it in the article and append a dated correction note saying what changed. We do not quietly edit the record or delete stories to make an error disappear. Substantive corrections update the article's modified date.
Errors of fact, a wrong figure, name, date, location, or characterisation, are corrected. Clarifications that add missing context are noted where they materially change how a story reads. Typographical fixes are made without a note.
If you believe an article is wrong, contact us or email hello@australiandeveloper.com.au with the article's URL and the specific fact in question, with a source where possible. We review every request and respond.
