Community consultation has opened on Ginninderra East, a planned new Canberra suburb on former CSIRO land between Belconnen and Gungahlin. The Housing Industry Association (HIA) welcomed the start of consultation in a media release this month.
Why it matters
HIA’s ACT and Southern NSW executive director, Geordan Murray, said the project is a chance to create a new community while delivering much-needed housing choice. He said it would put more housing near existing suburbs, jobs and services in Canberra’s north.

HIA says housing choice and affordability should sit at the centre of planning for the suburb.
For context on how the Territory’s land release pipeline has been performing, our earlier report on the Suburban Land Agency’s 2025-26 land sales shows income of $406.4m, $22.9m under budget, according to Region Canberra’s coverage of the annual report.
HIA’s release is a welcome-and-encourage statement from an industry body. It does not set out the Territory’s own planning position, so the figures below are HIA’s description of the site, not a confirmed plan.
The numbers
According to HIA, the site covers approximately 240 hectares and could accommodate around 3,000 homes. The release lists the other elements the site could hold:
- a school
- parks
- sporting ovals
- shops
- community facilities
- areas protected for nature conservation
HIA frames these as what the site “could accommodate”, so the mix and counts are not settled in the release.
Mr Murray said the people who might one day live in Ginninderra East should have their aspirations, needs and budgets heard, calling the consultation “a great opportunity for Canberrans to share their views”.
What’s next
HIA is encouraging its members and the wider community to take part and share ideas for what Mr Murray called a welcoming, practical and well-connected new suburb.
The HIA release does not give a closing date for submissions, nor does it say which ACT Government agency is running the consultation or when land might reach the market. Those details sit with the ACT Government’s own consultation material, which we could not read for this report, so we have not stated them.
The release names no individual developer or builder for the site. Anyone planning to make a submission should check the ACT Government’s consultation page for the closing date and format before drafting.
