Launceston-based 3D Construction & Developments took out the top Home of the Year honour at this year’s HIA Tasmania Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards, held in Hobart on Saturday night, recognising its Black Point Lodge build at Interlaken in the Central Highlands region.

Why it matters

Black Point Lodge sits in Tasmania’s Central Highlands and was purpose-designed to suit that region’s cold, exposed climate. The lodge was previously featured on Grand Designs Australia, Series 12. Pulse Tasmania reported that 3D Construction & Developments took home eight awards on the night overall, with wins spanning custom home building, a renovation and addition project, and bathroom design, on top of the top Home of the Year honour.

The numbers

Black Point Lodge was built from locally sourced dolerite stone, weathered Blackbutt cladding and aged hardwood decking, with dolerite running up four chimneys. The interior uses Blackbutt timber linings, stone fireplaces and burnished concrete floors, with recycled Blackbutt window frames holding floor-to-ceiling glass and hydronic heating under the floors. No construction cost or floor area was disclosed. Across the awards night, 3D Construction & Developments won eight categories; Wilson Homes won five awards, including Professional Major Builder. HIA Tasmania executive director Benjamin Price said the results reflected “the skill and pride in this industry.”

What’s next

For 3D Construction & Developments, the Home of the Year title adds to the profile Black Point Lodge already built through its Grand Designs Australia appearance. The same awards night also recognised other Tasmanian builders: St Joseph Affordable Homes for 36 affordable homes in Triabunna, and Merlin Constructions for its Little Bich Retreats townhouse development at Bicheno.

Woodhams Builders won the consumer-voted People’s Choice Home of the Year for a home at Otago Bay, and Axis Homes Tas took Residential Design for a pavilion-style home on the South Arm peninsula. Among the individual honours, Django Ward of Skookom won Apprentice of the Year, and Lily Millwood of Wilson Homes, a former carpentry apprentice now working as a cadet construction supervisor, won the Young Achiever award, with HIA Tasmania executive director Benjamin Price pointing to her path from apprentice to supervisor as the kind young Tasmanians should know is open to them.
