Three first homebuyers are preparing to move into new four-bedroom houses at Playford Alive, Adelaide (South Australia), after a construction trial finished the homes in 17 weeks, according to a Glam Adelaide report published on 4 November 2026.

The homes sit within Renewal SA’s Playford Alive development. South Australian builder Hickinbotham completed them in less than four months, in a trial run with Renewal SA to test how much building time can be cut.

Why it matters

The trial is aimed at shortening the time families wait for a new home to be built. Glam Adelaide reports that Hickinbotham sees the approach as repeatable across future housing developments.

Hickinbotham Group Managing Director Michael Hickinbotham said: “Our ambition is to make four-month construction the standard.”

The trial was run by Renewal SA and Hickinbotham together. It combined prefabricated building components with carefully coordinated construction schedules.

The numbers

Each house is a single storey with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and one open-plan kitchen, living and dining space. Floor space is approximately 180 sqm per house.

Prefabricated modules let the frames, external walls and roofs be completed within one month. Traditional building methods were then used to finish the interiors and the remaining construction.

The report says the three homes were sold to first homebuyers through HomeSeekerSA earlier this year. It does not state the sale prices.

What’s next

The buyers are expected to receive their keys and move in shortly, per the report. The report does not give a handover date.

Builders were allowed onto the Playford Alive land before the surrounding roads, paths, water and electrical services were finished, so building did not wait on the wider estate.

The report describes the aim as a possible way to change how quickly new homes reach South Australians.

Glam Adelaide places the trial against a run of strong state numbers. It cites Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showing 16,408 dwellings approved in South Australia in the 12 months to September 2026, which it describes as the highest for any 12-month period in the state’s history. It also reports 13,738 homes completed in the year to June 2026, above the State Government’s annual target of 13,500 and up 23.1 per cent on the 11,160 completed in the year to June 2024.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Nick Champion said the trial shows what is possible when new ways of delivering housing are found, and that three first homebuyers get their keys sooner than they expected. Member for Light James Agness said every week taken off a build means a family settles in sooner.

Glam Adelaide says final fencing and landscaping are finished and the homes are ready for their owners.
