Bathroom manufacturer Interpod has been appointed to supply 1,373 prefabricated pods for the State Library Exchange tower in Melbourne’s CBD, Built Off-Site reported on 5 November 2026. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2027.

Why it matters

According to Built Off-Site, Interpod is teaming up with head contractor Built on the 58-storey tower rising over the new State Library Station, at Swanston and La Trobe streets. Only two pod designs are used, which the outlet says keeps both factory production and installation uniform.

Built Off-Site reports that the factory will complete the waterproofing, tiling, plumbing, fixtures and finishes before trucking the units to Melbourne. The outlet says each pod arrives tested and ready to fit, so fewer wet-area trades are needed on site.

The site is a tight one. The outlet says the tower is being built above State Library Station, about 42 metres below Swanston Street, and alongside a busy tram corridor, leaving limited room for deliveries, storage and construction activity. Interpod said offsite manufacturing would cut material movements and the number of trades needed to complete bathrooms in the tower.

Built Off-Site says design and coordination work with Built is underway.

The numbers

  • Developer: Scape, part of The Living Company, in partnership with RMIT University.
  • Funding: the outlet says the two partners have together committed more than $270 million.
  • Beds: about 1,400 student places, with teaching, commercial and retail space in the same building.
  • RMIT takes the lowest nine levels for teaching, research and industry work, and the student housing sits above.
  • Interpod’s record, from a company profile the outlet cites: over 45,000 pods supplied in Australia and New Zealand.
  • The contract value and manufacturing programme have not been disclosed.

What’s next

First pod deliveries are scheduled for early 2027, and construction of the broader development is scheduled for completion in mid-2029, according to Built Off-Site.

Per the outlet, the New South Wales manufacturer’s earlier work includes pods for Scape Franklin in Melbourne (also delivered by Built) and student housing in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland. It also notes that Built has used prefab bathrooms on previous Scape projects, together with factory-made joinery and digitally coordinated construction.

For Victorian builders and trade contractors, the takeaway is scale: the outlet notes that one high-rise will see more than 1,300 repeated bathroom installations. The report does not give a price or a factory production schedule, so those remain open.
