Canberra childcare centres in limbo as provider enters administration

Finexia's childcare arm Shared Beginnings is in administration; Bonython and Conder are 2 of 7 centres nationally now run by DVT McLeods.

Shared Beginnings, the childcare operator running early learning centres at Bonython and Conder, entered voluntary administration on 19 October 2026 after its parent, ASX-listed Finexia Financial Group, withdrew further funding. Business News Australia reported Bill Karageozis and Nick Keramos of restructuring firm DVT McLeods were appointed as voluntary administrators and now control the business, which operates seven centres across the ACT, Queensland and Victoria.

Why it matters

Two of Canberra’s early learning centres now sit inside a company under external administration, leaving families and staff in the Tuggeranong district waiting on whether the sites keep trading while administrators assess the business. Shared Beginnings only exists because Finexia built it in 2025 to hold centres salvaged from the collapse of Genius Early Learning, a national childcare group that went under in March that year. Stockwire X reported Finexia’s own filing described the funding it provided since then as a prolonged and costly recovery effort. For ACT operators and builders watching the childcare sector, the episode is a reminder that a rescue structure built on top of one collapse can still fail, and that administration can follow a restructuring rather than replace the need for one.

The numbers

Finexia has disclosed no dollar figure for its exposure to Shared Beginnings. The company told the market the size of any impairment or contingent liability is not certain at this time, according to Stockwire X’s reporting on the ASX filing. The administration covers seven centres in total: two in the ACT at Bonython and Conder, three in Victoria at Reservoir, Mont Albert and Beaumaris, and two in Queensland at Sinnamon Park and Kenmore. The move follows a separate transaction days earlier. Business News Australia and Stockwire X both reported Finexia completed the divestment of its Stayco asset on 15 October 2026, removing about $25m of senior and subordinated debt from its balance sheet as part of a wider exit from non-core holdings. Genius Early Learning’s collapse, which created the pool of centres Shared Beginnings was built to hold, dates to March 2025.

What’s next

Administrators Karageozis and Keramos are now assessing Shared Beginnings’ options, with Business News Australia reporting a sale or a wind-down are both on the table and no decision confirmed. Finexia said it would keep the market informed as the administration proceeds. Until a decision is made, the status of the Bonython and Conder centres remains unresolved, which matters for any ACT childcare, education or construction operator that leases to, supplies, or competes with the sites. A sale process could bring a new operator or landlord into the Tuggeranong market, while a wind-down would leave two centres and their sites looking for a new use. No ACT Government authority is party to the administration itself, which is a company law process running through Finexia’s own ASX disclosures.

The pattern is not unique to Canberra. A Bendigo childcare centre was blocked outright over site risk earlier this month, and a Canterbury-Bankstown childcare site is tied up in its own dispute, underscoring how exposed small operators and site owners are across the sector right now, whether the problem is a planning refusal or a parent company pulling funding. For a Territory with only a handful of large-scale childcare operators, two centres changing hands or closing is a meaningful shift in local supply, and any ACT builder or landlord with an early learning tenant should treat this administration as a live test of how quickly a corporate failure can flow through to a leased site.
